I look back at my Instagram photos and think about how I was raised to hate myself as we often are raised. To look in the mirror and not see myself as a whole, but to pick and criticize my flaws as if those should be highlighted over other features. I was taught to look at myself through a bully’s eyes and not my own. It’s no one’s fault because everyone else was taught the same. The self-criticism was passed down from generation to generation as if it was a family heirloom. It evolved to be current with the times, but the root was all the same: never look in the mirror and see beauty, only a beast. I just wish that cycle had been broken before it almost broke me. Maybe a higher self-esteem could have changed several lives for the better at one point. Where would we be today?
